20 Questions to Ask When You're Looking For Work as a Therapist

20 questions to ask when looking for a job as a therapist

Navigating the job market as a mental health therapist can be tricky and not all offers are clear on what it is they are and are not offering you as employee (or a contractor!) As we have interviewed and hired interns, new graduates and licensed professionals, we have found these questions to be helpful as you navigate the job market.

1-Are you getting paid for all of your work or just your clinical hour?

2-Are you expected to do your own marketing or bring in your own clients?

3-What is the company structure and frequency for supervision?

4-Do you get individual supervision? Group supervision?

5-Do you get paid for completing notes?

6-Do you get paid for staff meetings?

7-Does the clinic have values that guide culture and decisions?

8-What is the clinic’s culture? Does this match with your values and vision of quality of life?

9-What trainings do they offer? Do they provide CE’s?

10-How do they support self care?

11-How do they support burnout prevention?

12-What benefits are provided such as medical, dental, vision and PTO?

13-Are you 1099 but with a schedule? Consider looking into the legal requirements and tax obligations of being a 1099 contractor.

14-How many clinical hours are you required to work? What other work is required beyond clinical?

15-Do you get paid for No Shows and late cancellations?

16-How does your schedule get filled if someone cancels in the cancellation window?

17-Who handles your schedule if you get sick?

18-Do you get paid if a client does not pay for their session?

19-How much PTO do you get and how is that accrued?

20-How are legal costs covered in the instance you are subpoenaed or have a question that needs legal review?
